Thank you students for the links on the ELEMENTS of Design.
I've put them on the ELEMENTS of Design page where we can use them for reference.
.
ASSIGNMENT:
.
ELEMENTS of DESIGN POSTER:
- In CorelDraw set up file portrait or landscape: 8 1/2 x 11"
- you must have a prominent and legible title for your poster: ELEMENTS of Design
- each element must be labeled or identified: Line, shape, form, colour, value, texture
- show examples for each Element of Design... show what it is and what it might look like in a design
- you must use text to help define, describe or explain what the element is, what it does in a design
- you can use EXPRESSIVE TYPOGRAPHY to SHOW MEANING
- consider the arrangement of your title, text and visuals so that the OVERALL DESIGN of the poster is attractive, legible, educational, and promotes the elements of design
  • if your poster educates the viewer (shows them what the elements of design are)... and... explainswhat each element is... you are on the RIGHT TRACK!
  • We'll start printing Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 : ) we'll print 200% and tile two sheets together... I'll show you how ; )

WEDNESDAY, October 26, 2011
There's a new wikipage called "TYPOGRAPHY."

.
.
.
Note from Ms Gulia:
There was a problem with the discussion area BUT IT's NOW FIXED... Sorry.

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

I've created a new page called "Communication Technology - Social Impact."
.
Click on the page, Read the newspaper article, look at the links...
and answer the questions in the discussion forum.
.
Your postings are due THIS PERIOD.
.
When you're finished you can continue with your page layouts : )

Try Out Different Layouts

- use an inspirational quote (positive, uplifting, hopeful) as your title

- find a appropriate image (don't spend too much time looking for an image or quote)

- use one or two key words from the quote as your TITLE

- arrange the TITLE, IMAGE & PARAGRAPH text (use your quote or lorem ipsum text - see below) to create DIFFERENT PAGE LAYOUT DESIGNS:

1. with a margin ...see this link for examples of margins, bleed, partial bleed... etc etc.
2. with a bleed (the image covers the whole page)
3. with a partial bleed (the image covers 2 or 3 sides of the page)
4. text on a solid colour field (eg. coloured rectangle)
5. text on a trasnparent colour field (add a transparency to the rectangle)
6. add a transparency to the image
7. try variations of your choice... different colour, size, or placement of text... eg. outlines on text

Hints:
Make sure the text is LEGIBLE (eg. easy to read)
Make sure your title stands out (eg. make it bigger? bolder? brighter?)
Apply the RULE OF THIRDS to your layout designs
.
.
.

.

Dropping off your work:
.
Drop off... 2 files: . Lastname_inspiration.cdr & Lastname_inspiration.pdf
When working in CorelDraw, drop off both the .cdr file AND a .pdf file.
To create a .pdf go under "file" and "publish to pdf."
PDF = Portable Document Format

- PDFs are compact; eg. small file size
- easy to email because their size is small
- easy to open and see becasuse all you need to see them is Adobe PDF Reader which is FREE (this is important because not everyone has CorelDraw or other graphic software).
- professional designer use PDFs to send their work, layouts/sketches, portfolios to employers or clients.

.

.

.
.

Lorem Ipsum text:
- is place holder text for design purposes
- it allows designers to put text in a layout during the design process... so designers can work out a design even before the finished text is ready... (Lorem Ipsum text is filled in/replaced with ACTUAL text later)
Click here for Lorem Ipsum text you can Copy Paste

Thursday, September 15, 2011 Day 2

Todays work:

- Create a new wiki page & name it "Testpage - your name" ...add tags

- put a big colourful title on your page

- include a photo of yourself (click on "file")

- list at least 3 things about youself eg. hobbies, sports, favourite music/movies/animals etc

- add a link to your favourite educational/inforational website (eg. The Toronto Star, wikipedia etc)

- explore the wonderful world of widgets: eg. video, maps, calendar, discussion, RSS feed... etc etc. and include at least 5 in your testpage

Hints:

- stay focused on your task (don't waste time getting distracted by "which photo/video should i choose?")

- if you get stuck... use google to find information to help you... eg. google "how to insert an RSS feed into wikispages" or "how to resize a photo or video in wikispaces"
- this is not a personal space such as Facebook; wikispace is an educational/professional space for us to work on... so only use appropriate content.

Have FUN!
